OUR MISSION

We produce world-class new music projects & performances that INSPIRE AND ENGAGE WITH individuals, audiences, communities and artists.

Founded by artistic director Isobel Archer, our core of Australia-based Principal Artists represent some of the most creative solo and ensemble musicians in the world. We are made up of both established and emerging artists, and are working to push forward the contemporary classical scene in Australia.

The orchestra works with both established and talented early-career musicians, to ensure new music has the opportunity to survive past its conception. And not only survive, but thrive. Through our Arcturus emerging composers’ program we regularly accept submissions for new music. No fees, no red tape. If we like what we hear we will endeavor to work with the creator to produce something special. This open submissions structure leads to a culture of collaboration, creativity, and authenticity.

The ensemble believes that new music is relevant both to wider society and to people's lives. We regularly commision and perform work that reflects this. By working with mixed media and incorporating classical music into other art forms like video, theatre and poetry, we connect with a wider audience than music alone can reach. For example our Hidden Letters concerts, which invite the audience in to the context behind the music, incorporate spoken word, letters and poetry performances.

As our work with schools and music education programmes demonstrate, the Sydney Sinfonietta believes that arts participation is transformational, nurturing confidence and creativity in individuals and a sense of identity and place in communities.

A contemporary classical orchestra embodies values that celebrate innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration, redefining the boundaries of musical expression.

By prioritising diversity in repertoire and performers, we aim to resonate with a wider audience while honouring traditional roots. When you experience one of our concerts you are invited to explore a world of new sounds and narratives. This often happens in unexpected spaces beyond the concert hall.
The Sinfonietta performs in such diverse places as museums, art galleries, town halls, and even abandoned buildings.

This commitment to creativity encourages the fusion of genres, breaking down barriers between classical and contemporary styles, and fostering a dynamic dialogue between artists and audiences.
